The Raven in Cordoba

Wednesday April 1 2009

The Raven's been working hard on Al Andalus - the 8-day horse endurance ride across Spain - so the Descanso en Cordoba - rest day in Cordoba - after 6 days was very welcome!

The Romans built "Corduba" in 169 BC because of its strategic importance on the Gaudalquivir River. It became a main shipping port for transporting local olive oil and wine back to Rome. We walked across the old Roman bridge into the old city, surrounded by some of the old fortress walls that are still standing.

We visited the Alcazar (castle, rebuilt in 1327 AD) and gardens with Spanish friends Fernando, David and Alberto. There were some cool ancient mosaics on the walls of the museum.

We had a traditional Spanish lunch of tapas (salmorejo - yum!) in a bar afterwards, before spending more hours of the day wandering this neat old city.

The Raven in Barcelona

Friday March 20 2009

The Raven likes Spain... and Barcelona is a favorite city to visit.

The Mercat de la Boqueria on La Rambla is a place to get fresh fruit drinks - refreshing on a warm day.

There's the waterfront
which is a good place to people watch.

And of course, being a Starbucks connoisseur, having visited many around the world, this little cafe tucked away on a sidestreet was a great place to sample Spanish Starbucks and to take a rest after a long day of rambling.
